Hello from the Instruction Team!!
2024 is going to be an exciting year for golf instruction at the BHI Club with unveiling our new learning center the Byrd House! This state of the art teaching and fitting studio will have 2 bays that will be outfitted with Trackman technology including teaching and simulators, large tv displays for easy video viewing, Smart2move force plates, Sportsbox AI motion capture, fitting equipment and so much more! We hope to have the bays fully functional in the mid Spring so stop by and check out the progress next time you are on the island!
We will also continue to have demo equipment from the best brands in golf including Callaway, Ping, Taylormade, Titleist, XXIO and more.
We are continuing to use Coach 360 from Golf Genius that allows you to book lessons right from your phone or tablet and view lesson notes from past sessions. We are working with the geniuses to have a member booking portal that you can do directly from the website or club app so stay tuned for that as well!
The Bald Head Island Club is proud to offer instruction catering to all levels of player. Many questions that we get are about new players and if we can coach them. Most certainly we do!! We also have strong Junior programming and programs catered to simply playing better on the course. The philosophy of the instruction team is to make small changes in fundamentals rather than always going for a major in swing change. Golf is tough! We want to make the process of getting better more fun rather than a continuous struggle.

Bald Head Island Club Golf Team Instructional Philosophy
Golf instructors often have different styles which make each instructor unique just the same way that golfers are unique!
The instructors at the Bald Head Island Club want to help you reach your goals of playing better golf and having more fun playing. We strive to make each person that comes to our lesson tee feel special, understood and hopefully improved upon leaving us. We hope that you feel comfortable talking with the instructional team even if it your first time meeting us! Below we will list a few of our coaching keys to help you understand our methods and feel more comfortable with us!
- Improvement in golf is often learning to think differently or prepare differently which means it not always a major swing change that will come with a lesson.
- Asking questions will help us get to know you as a person, and that helps us know the best ways to coach you.
- Measuring and Assessing your skills at the start helps us show you your improvement over time. Without a baseline, we are just randomly hitting golf balls!
- Determining what your golf ball does in flight is key to making any changes. It is not always the body that needs to change. Maybe it's the club fitting or fitness we might look to.
- Coaching fundamentals is first and foremost in our minds. Many times players can improve with a simple adjustment of posture or alignment, and don't mistake something simple for a waste of time. Those simple small things are why the players on Tour are so good!

~ From our first lesson I was hooked!
~ My husband and I attended all four of the clinics offered at the end of 2020. We attended chipping, putting, full body swing and course management. With that training, I finally got my swing under control and moved from the kids tees to the ladies tees! The clinics were a perfect balance of group teaching and personal attention. In each clinic I learned what drills will help me continue to improve and I got personal attention to understand where my stroke or swing was not helping my game. Turns out using your wrists in a full body swing is good and staying down isn't a rule! My husband is a much better golfer, but he picked up some tips to improve his game as well. These clinics can help anyone just stay tuned up.

Get Tournament Ready Program
Do you want to play more golf and enjoy all the fun that comes along with the Bald Head Island Club’s Golf Tournaments? Then this Get Tournament Ready Program is just for you. Tournament Season is fast approaching here at the Bald Head Island Club, and with that comes excitement and nerves! This program will focus on areas like mental practice and on course management that many players overlook. The program can be completed in a group or an individual setting. The group sessions are great for people looking to play in tournaments for the first time or simply like the supportive environment of group instruction. The individual program will be more tailored to your personal needs and goals.
There will be three 1 hour sessions to be completed on your schedule or what works best for the group.
Session 1 ~ Finding the Go To Shot/Mental Practice/Usable Routine
Session 2 ~ On Course Management
Session 3 ~ Short Game Challenges
Group Sessions
Each group must have a minimum of 3 people and a maximum of 6. These sessions are a great way to improve your game and get comfortable in a tournament setting with other people.

Junior Clinics & Camps
Gator Golf Camp – Ages 7-15
This camp is designed to introduce the spirit of golf and develop each junior’s abilities to make golf more enjoyable. During each camp the following golf related life skills will be demonstrated and reinforced: courtesy, judgment, respect, confidence, honesty, integrity, responsibility, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Most importantly, summer camps are designed to provide a safe environment for each junior to have FUN!
The professional staff will use age appropriate and skill appropriate instruction utilizing US Kids Golf and PGA.coach methods!
General ages for this are 7-13.

The Bald Head Island Club’s Gator Golf Clinics are a great way to introduce the game of golf to your children. The Professional staff will strive to create an engaging and fun atmosphere for all skill levels of players with game based learning as well as structure in the fundamentals of the game. Each 30-45 minute clinic will cover a variety of topics to give each student training and will involve games to improve in all aspects of the game including full swing, putting, chipping, pitching and bunker play.

Turtle Tots Golf Clinics – Ages 3-6
The Bald Head Island Club’s Turtle Tots Clinics are a great way to introduce the game of golf to your children. Early development of the four pre-swing fundamentals, grip, posture, alignment, and aim, will give your young golfers the best chance for success and can lead to a lifetime of enjoyment. Utilizing enthusiastic PGA instructors, your child will receive fun, engaging, and structured instruction that will enable them to achieve more success and have more fun with golf.
Each clinic will involve near golf and actual golf experiences to enhance the motor skill development by using various methods to challenge the students balance and coordination. Clinics will involve fun games that incorporate running, hopping, throwing, pitching, and more specifically to golf the hand/eye skills involved in putting, chipping and the full swing.
Our number 1 goal for you little ones is to make them want to come back to the golf course with us or even better yet with you!

The Bald Head Island Club professional golf staff will conduct junior golf play days
throughout the summer for the enrichment of your child. Play days are designed to
introduce the spirit of golf and to instill proper golf etiquette. The following life skills will be demonstrated and reinforced: courtesy, judgment, respect, confidence, honesty, integrity, responsibility, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Most importantly, play days are designed to have FUN!!
Groups will be formed based on ability and age. The professional staff will choose
appropriate formats for each group.

If there is lightning or other adverse weather within 15 minutes prior to start and 15 minutes after start, the play day will not happen

Meet the Pros
Abby is a Certified PGA Professional in Teaching and Coaching and has a passion for instruction that started right here on Bald Head Island. She learned the game at the Club and went on to earn a scholarship to East Carolina University, where she was named the 2008 and 2010 Conference USA Golfer of the Year and 2010 East Carolina Female Athlete of the Year. After two seasons playing professional golf on the Symetra Tour, Abby came back to Bald Head Island and discovered her passion for teaching and coaching golfers. She is a Titleist Performance Institute and US Kids Golf Certified Coach.

Andy came to Bald Head Island by way of Pebble Beach Resorts in California where he served in increasingly more responsible roles since starting there in 2003. In between his roles at Pebble Beach, Andy spent time as an assistant pro at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, SC. Andy is thrilled to be back in the Carolinas and loves getting out on the greens and passing along his knowledge of the game while cracking a few jokes along the way.

Jason comes to us from the Golden State and has a strong background in club fitting and Coaching. He graduated from New Mexico State University with a Professional Golf Management degree and has since earned additional PGA certification and his “star” in Golf Operations. Jason’s past work experience covers both coasts, where he spent time at Charlotte Country Club in the East and Bel Air Country Club and Pebble Beach Resorts on the West.
