Croquet

The game’s arrival on Bald Head Island can be traced to a long-time friend of the Mitchell Family, who introduced the idea after a visit to Pinehurst. In 1986, Kent and Mark Mitchell agreed to develop the first croquet court on the BHI Club grounds. Today there are 3 beautifully manicured courts known as ‘greenswards’ and a pavilion for player use. Situated adjacent to the South Beach shoreline, the courts enjoy the sea breezes throughout the summer and a temperate climate allowing for year-round play.

The professional croquet staff offers an instructional program that caters to players of all ages and skill levels. Private lessons, clinics and coached games are available throughout the year. The Recreation Department maintains a supply of mallets and balls for those who are just starting to learn the game.

The Croquet Club organizes member scramblers, and tournaments that are played throughout the year, along with monthly socials. They also offer open play on Sunday for any BHI Club member who cares to join them for some casual coaching.

Relax and refresh after croquet at the adjacent Horizons restaurant and the Aquatics Center complex featuring our tennis courts, playground areas, fitness center, golf shop and the welcoming Bald Head Island clubhouse.
